Vision:

At St Paul and St Timothy’s Infant School, we understand that personal, social, emotional, health and economic well-being is fundamental in creating a positive future for our children. We strive to ensure that every child feels safe, valued and respected as part of our school and in our PSHE lessons. We deliver a robust PSHE/RSHE curriculum that equips children with the tools, confidence and language to create and maintain healthy and positive relationships. Our PSHE and RSHE curriculum reinforces our Safeguarding policy by providing children with the skills and knowledge to help keep themselves and others safe. We encourage our children to be independent, responsible and compassionate. We provide the children with opportunities to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community. We provide opportunities for the Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development through our teaching of British Values. We ensure that they experience the process of democracy in school through our school council. We teach them about rights and responsibilities. We model and teach strategies to overcome challenges, how to build resilience and the importance of having a positive self-image.

Aims:

Our teaching aims to:

  • improve learning in all areas of the curriculum by developing the ‘whole child’
  • build a PSHE curriculum that incorporates the understanding of RSHE
  • ensure that children know and understand what constitutes a healthy lifestyle
  • teach children to be aware of safety issues and know how/who to report them to
  • teach children to understand what makes a positive relationship
  • support the children to develop a Growth Mindset and to practise strategies to build resilience and to overcome challenge
  • teach children to be independent and responsible members of the school community
  • provide opportunities for the children to be positive and active members of a democratic society
  • encourage the children to develop self-confidence and self-esteem, and make informed choices regarding personal and social issues
  • develop their sense of responsibility for themselves, their friends and family, their community and the wider world.
  • create economic well-being for the future of our children by providing a basic understanding of money management and opportunities to practise saving through our Lifesavers Saving Scheme.

IMPLEMENTATION

Teaching and learning:

At St Paul and St Timothy’s, our PSHE lessons are delivered using the scheme of work, Jigsaw. Jigsaw provides a comprehensive spiral PSHE curriculum that builds on skills, knowledge and language as the children progress through the school. Through teaching PSHE, we promote active learning through discussions in Philosophy for Children (P4C) and through investigations and problem-solving activities. We encourage the children to take part in a range of practical activities that promote active citizenship, e.g. charity fundraising through enterprise clubs, a focus on sustainable living through the eco-council and the planning of changes within our school by involving the school council. We offer children the opportunity to hear visiting speakers, such as the fire brigade, the police, NHS workers and representatives of the church to talk about their roles in our community. Our children are also involved in initiatives such as; Sustrans Road Safety, Lifesavers and contributing to our school foodbank. Through Jigsaw the children explore the key themes; Being Me in My World, Celebrating Difference, Dreams and Goals, Healthy Me, Relationships and Changing Me. Our RSHE curriculum is taught through a Catholic lens following the Archdiocesan, Journey in Love.

PSHE Curriculum:

PSHE, by its nature, permeates all areas of the curriculum. The policy statements for each subject should be referred to for more details.

EYFS

In Reception children are taught PSHE explicitly through our Jigsaw lessons but the aspects within the key themes are modelled and practised through our daily interactions, discussions and Continuous Provision activities. There is an emphasis throughout the year on building positive relationships, managing our feelings and keeping ourselves safe as this aligns with the Early Learning Goals that the children are working towards in Personal, Social and Emotional Development.

KS1; Year 1 and Year 2

Throughout KS1 the children explore the key themes taught using Jigsaw in greater depth. The children will be encouraged to make links within their learning and will have the opportunity to practise active learning, they will develop their critical thinking skills, problem-solving and communication skills.

Inclusion:

Staff at St Paul and St Timothy’s are committed to equal opportunities and education for all pupils.  Our teachers provide learning opportunities matched to the individual needs of all children. We respect that each child has different needs and we will provide a broad, challenging and adapted curriculum which addresses the needs of every child. At St Paul and St Timothy’s, we will endeavor to achieve the aims set out in this statement in accordance with the Catholic faith and Gospel values. We will create an atmosphere in which each child can feel loved, respected and valued by setting standards of behaviour and conduct which are outlined in our three school values; Ready, Respect and Safe. In order to promote good relationships and maintain a happy and caring atmosphere in which to work; staff will lead by example and encourage the children through praise and positive behavior management.

British Values:

We ensure care is taken when selecting source material and that a range of perspectives and viewpoints are represented including those of men and women from different racial, national and religious groups. Care is taken that societies are not just represented from the British perspective but also from their own. Through PSHE the five British values are always considered: democracy, rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths.

Vocabulary:

At St Paul and St Timothy’s the importance of vocabulary is highlighted through the PSHE curriculum and is evident on a progression map. Vocabulary is taught and promoted through PSHE lessons and will feature on displays for children to access.

IMPACT

Assessment:

At St Paul and St Timothy’s assessment is an integral part of the teaching process. Children will complete a ‘baseline’ assessment activity at the start of every topic to show what the children already know and understand. The children will then complete an end-of-topic assessment task to show the progress and to inform future planning and next steps. The overall aims of the PSHE curriculum far exceed the limits of academic life as the skills acquired by the children will support them through their life after they have left school.

Monitoring:

Monitoring of teaching and learning takes place regularly through learning walks, ‘book looks’, staff and pupil voice and meetings with the Senior Leadership Team and Link Governors.

Enrichment

Each year group will participate in enrichment opportunities to enhance learning and promote a love of learning.

RSHE

The teaching of RSE(Relationship and Sex Education) is rooted in our Catholic faith and the teaching of the Gospel Values. It is our intention that pupils will learn how to foster healthy relationships and friendships in light of the wisdom of the Church. Pupils will flourish when they truly understand their innate human dignity, love and appreciation of themselves, including respect for their bodies, and the way they were made by God. RSE is is taught in a cross-curricular way beginning in the Foundation Stage and continuing throughout Key Stages 1 and 2. The ‘Journey in Love’ scheme of work is followed for RSE, with the support of Jigsaw resources.

LifeSavers Saving Club

Here at St Paul and St Timothy’s, we recognise the importance of developing early financial literacy to support a healthy and positive relationship with money.
We take part in the LifeSavers programme to help our pupils and families learn about money and how to manage it wisely. As part of the LifeSavers Programme we have partnered with a local credit union, Central Liverpool Credit Union, to provide our school savings club for pupils.
Upon registering your child with a savings account through our programme, your child will receive their own passbook, wallet and Account Number. We hold Savings Sessions in our School Hall every alternative Friday morning. The children can make a maximum deposit of £5 for each session and must be accompanied by an adult. Withdrawal sessions are held at the end of every term should your child wish to withdraw any money that they have saved.
This is a great opportunity to develop and practise healthy saving habits with the children. The children are encouraged by our staff cashiers to use phrases such as ‘I would like to deposit’, ‘I would like to withdraw’, and ‘My savings goal is’. This is also a fantastic opportunity to explore real-life Maths!
If you wish to register your child please make enquiries to Miss Pimblett, our Pastoral Lead or our School Office.
