“Sport has literally changed my life. I am here because of sport. It has given me a lot of confidence, a lot of courage and a lot of discipline. It’s helped me to be the person that I’ve grown to be today”

Why do we teach PE?
Physical education is an essential contributor to the development of the whole child. Through the teaching of PE, we promote for all pupils a positive attitude towards an active lifestyle. By becoming physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness, children develop an understanding of the importance of a healthy lifestyle and balanced diet. It provides pupils with the opportunity to be creative, competitive and face up to different challenges as individuals and in groups and teams.
Physical education helps pupils develop personally and socially. They work as individuals, in groups and teams, developing concepts of fairness and of personal and social responsibility. They take on different roles and responsibilities, including leadership coaching.
How we teach PE
We believe a high-quality PE curriculum is an integral part of the whole school curriculum and one that staff, pupils and parents understand and can contribute to. To ensure consistency and progression in key concepts and knowledge, we use and follow Get Set 4 PE schemes of work, this allows us to present pupils with opportunities to be creative, competitive and co-operative across a wide range of sports and activities.
Our PE programme incorporates a variety of sports and fundamental skills to ensure all children develop confidence, tolerance and their own aspirations. We give all children the chance to engage in extra-curricular activities during and after school, in addition to competitive sporting events. It is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also a positive wellbeing and mindset for all pupils.
Enrichment is central to PE giving all children opportunities to compete within school and with other schools. This builds character and encourages a positive mindset, raising aspirations and personal pride for all. Every lesson and PE competition promotes values such as fair play, cooperation and collaboration with others as part of a team, respect for others and the aspiration to be more. These valuable life skills will help children succeed at our school and beyond.

Enrichment
Within our school we have introduced Physical Education ambassadors who play an important role in taking responsibility for our PE and playground equipment and that it is being used correctly. Year 2 ambassadors serve as role models on how to use the equipment correctly and ensure that all equipment is returned correctly and safely.
Our school playground has had an outdoor climbing frame fitted which allows our children to climb, balance and hang. We ensure that all pupils have the opportunity to use the equipment regularly. We are committed to fostering a positive and inclusive environment where every child can thrive through sports and wellbeing activities.
Extra-curricular activities
Beyond the confines of our Physical Education curriculum, we have a commitment to the overall well-being of our pupils and this extends to the provision of extracurricular opportunities. We offer many after-school clubs such as: multi-sports, football, matball, dodgeball and mindfulness. As well as supplementing the children’s physical fitness, they contribute to their holistic development.
West Derby Network Panathlon Challenges
Through the West Derby Network schools are given opportunities to attend events throughout the year. Panathlon is a national charity which gives young people with disabilities and special educational needs every year the opportunity to take part in competitive sport. The Primary Panathlon programme introduces Panathon for 5-11-year olds, through a team competition that builds foundation skills in a range of Panathlon Sports such as Boccia and New Age Curling.
